Mountain Cherry (JP)
Study on East and West marks the beginning of my exploration of hands. While studying in Japan, I came to see Eastern and Western carving traditions more closely. Hands are tools of giving, taking, caring, making, and communicating—they are eyes, mouth, and heart in their own right. In this work, a single tree trunk was split and shaped into two hands—one left, one right, one Western, one Eastern—attempting to unite form and cultural habit in a single body.
